In 2018, Dr Sue Dyson (world renowned equine veterinarian, lameness specialist & researcher) developed with years of research the The Ridden Horse Pain Ethogram (RHpE).
This Ethogram, covers 24 definable equine behaviours.
Any of these 24 behaviors are 10 x times more likely to be observed in ridden horses that are lame or experiencing musculoskeletal pain (diagnosed and resolved with nerve blocks aka anesthesia ), as opposed to horses that are not lame or experiencing musculoskeletal pain.
An ethogram is a record of behaviours exhibited by an animal used in ethology, the scientific and objective study of animal behaviour. This is then correlated to a specific circumstance, or set of influencing factors. ie. lameness, or pain.
